There is no doubt about Twitter’s benefits. It’s a convenient way to keep up with memes, world news, and pop culture hot takes.
However, being an active Twitter user requires sifting through a daily deluge of toxic characters, including QAnon, white supremacists, bots, and deepfakes (though Donald Trump is no longer present). Additionally, there is no denying the stress and anxiety that the rapid news cycle of Twitter and the strain of constantly debating reply guys can cause.
Consider this: you are not required to use Twitter. While it may appear as though everyone else is doing so, you can be the change you wish to see in the world. Simply delete your account. Not to worry: it is not required to be permanent. If you find yourself feeling depleted and disoriented as a result of this, you can request a refund up to 30 days after the fact. However, if it ever becomes too much, simply return to this article and follow the steps. There is an entire world beyond your timeline to discover.
Deactivate your Twitter account in a browser
If you’re using a computer or a mobile browser, navigate to Twitter.com and sign in. To deactivate:
- On the web, click the More menu item in the bottom-left corner. Tap your profile icon in the mobile browser.
- Navigate to Settings and Privacy, then to Your account.
- Tap Deactivate your account at the bottom of the list.
- Locate the Deactivate link near the bottom of the page.
Before you get to that link, there will be a lot of information on the page, some of it quite useful. There is a detailed description of what will be hidden (your display name, @username, and public profile), an assurance that you can restore your account “for some time” if it was deleted accidentally or incorrectly, and a way to reactivate after 30 days or 12 months (useful if you are under siege and wish to take a break from Twitter rather than delete it entirely).
Additionally, there are links if you want to simply change your name, use your current name with another account, or download your Twitter data. This final one is always recommended prior to deleting any account; here is the link.
Deactivate your Twitter account in the Twitter app

- At the top, click Your account. At the bottom of the Your Account page, click Deactivate Account.
